Content Management Systems

Content Management Systems allow you to edit and update the content on your website, and selecting what suits your business can be a challenging and daunting process. This choice can often have a profound impact on how your website is managed and the value you are going to be able to drive from it.

Almost all websites today are created using a Content Management System (CMS) of some sort. CMS is a simple and effective way for you to turn your website into manageable components. It also allows people with less technical ability to publish new web pages, pictures and media.

Your options for a content management system range from:

  1. Open source CMS. These systems have wide-spread community support and have pre-built and low-cost add-ons that can be used to enhance the website experience.
  2. Specialist CMS solutions. There are solutions custom-built for specific industries or business types (eg. real-estate website systems that allow you to create a powerful real-estate website with relative low cost).
  3. eCommerce CMS solutions. These types of systems allow you to manage your products, categories and client base. Order management solutions can also be pre-built. eCommerce solutions range from relatively low cost ones right through to high-investment with high-functionality.
  4. Custom built CMS solutions. Occasionally you might need to build a custom application with very specific content needs. This may drive the need to develop a custom CMS.

How to decide what you need

When choosing your CMS, here are some factors to consider.

  1. What is your overall budget? Is this website crucial to business success or a proof of concept?
  2. How dynamic is your content? How often will you be publishing new content or altering existing content?
  3. Do you have specific functionality in mind that you must have EXACTLY how you imagined, or can you work largely with what is already available?
  4. How customised do you need certain parts of your website? Are you prepared to work around the constraints that your selected CMS poses?
  5. What are your hosting requirements? Are you expecting millions of users and cannot afford to be down for even 5 minutes? Or are you able to afford a couple of hours of outages here and there?
  6. How important is SEO? Some CMS are better for maximising SEO return but may have other trade-offs.
  7. Are you likely to do lots of digital marketing and will need a great deal of flexibility to meet the complex marketing requirements you have?
